Gov. Jan Brewer sent a scathing letter to President Obama Monday after hundreds of illegal immigrants were flown from Texas to Arizona and then dropped off at bus stations over the weekend.
Brewer said the U.S. Department of Homeland Security instituted the operation without notifying her office or other Arizona agencies, and that she learned of it through the media.
“Our nation and the State of Arizona face significant challenges stemming from your administration’s refusal to carry out its responsibility to secure our country’s southern border,” Brewer wrote. “This unwarranted operation is another disturbing example of a deliberate failure to enforce border security policies and repair a broken immigration system.”
Andy Adame, Tucson Border Patrol spokesman, confirmed that over the weekend about 400 immigrants who were apprehended in the Rio Grande Valley were flown to Tucson for processing due to lack of manpower in Texas, according to AZ Central.
It’s unclear what will happen to the immigrants next, according to AZ Central, which reported:
ICE officials said the migrants being released are families apprehended by the Border Patrol trying to enter the U.S. illegally. After screening, they are being released under supervision and then required to report to a local ICE office near their destination within 15 days.
Their cases will be managed based on ICE enforcement priorities, which focus on removing criminals who pose a threat as well as recent border crossers and immigration violators.
But [Ira] Mehlman at the [Federation for American Immigration Reform] said that once migrants are released, they often disappear and ICE doesn’t go looking for them unless they have criminal records.
Brewer demanded answers from Obama to nine questions addressing the operation, including who authorized it and what is known of the background of the individuals being released.
“I urge you to end this dangerous and unconscionable policy immediately, and instead take actions to fulfill the federal government’s fundamental responsibility of protecting our homeland by securing our nation’s borders,” her letter concluded.
