Controversial Oscar-winning actress Jane Fonda will deliver a commencement speech later this month at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, the college recently announced.
“We are truly honored to have Jane Fonda speak at this year’s commencement ceremony,” Dean Teri Schwartz told Deadline magazine last week. “Jane is a visionary and a remarkable artist who has spent her life telling deeply powerful stories that have moved and inspired audiences worldwide to action for the greater good and to a greater understanding of our common humanity through her films, philanthropic efforts and personal journeys.”
Many would disagree with Schwartz’s description of the actress.
Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly on Friday called Fonda “the most visible female, far-left person in the USA.”
“Because Ms. Fonda’s a very successful actress, that seems appropriate,” O’Reilly said on the “O’Reilly Factor.” “However, Jane Fonda committed treason during the Vietnam War, and she got away with it.”
While the media and academic community have expressed no real outrage, Vietnam veterans will surely have something to say about Fonda’s upcoming speech. Last year, they they boycotted “The Butler” after she was cast as Nancy Reagan in the film. In August, one movie theater in Kentucky refused to show the movie altogether.
