A Michigan elementary school is using an upcoming field day to encourage children to restrain their competitive “urge to win.”
Rochester’s North Hill Elementary School sent home a notice that said, according to Progressives Today:
The purpose of the day is for our school to get together for an enjoyable two hours of activities and provide an opportunity for students, teachers and parents to interact cooperatively. Since we believe that all of our children are winners, the need for athletic ability and the competitive “urge to win” will be kept to a minimum. The real reward will be the enjoyment and good feelings of participation.
Bennett Staph, whose child attends the school, posted the field day notice on her Facebook page.
“[My daughter] showed this to me tonight regarding her school’s field day event. I was even proud of her for pointing out the ridiculousness of it,” Staph wrote. “I am speechless…the ‘urge to win’ will be kept at a minimum. What are we teaching our children? Everyone isn’t a winner, there are winners and losers. The kids that win and get awards drive those that don’t to do better.”
To put the notice into perspective, Progressives Today pointed to a telling statement once made by former Washington, D.C., schools Superintendent Michelle Rhee, who has not been shy about criticizing public education.
“We are so concerned with making children feel good about themselves,” Rhee told a Memphis conference audience in 2011. “But we haven’t put in the time to make them good at anything.”
