Fla. officials defend Common Core testing company accused of indoctrinating ‘our kids’ to be gay

A  Florida lawmaker has hit the proverbial hornets’ nest by decrying an alleged pro-LGBT testing organization, which received a $220 million contract to prepare and administer Common Core end-of-course evaluations in his state.

Think Progress, a project of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, published a video of Florida Republican Representative Charles Van Zant speaking at the March “Operation Education Conference” held in Orlando.

In the sound bite, which provided no context but seemed designed strictly to embarrass the speaker, Van Zant bemoaned the awarding of the contract to A.I.R., American Institutes for Research, a Washington, D.C.-based social sciences organization.

Thoughtfully and deliberately he told the audience, “They are promoting as hard as they can, any youth that is interested in the LGBT agenda, and even name it 2-S, which they define as ‘having two spirits.’ The Bible has much to say about double-mindedness.”

“These people,” he continued, “will promote double-mindedness in state education and attract every one of your children to become as homosexual as they possibly can. I’m sorry to report that to you.”

The American Institutes for Research proudly extolls itself as staffed only by experts, and offers services and texts such as “Practice Brief: Providing Services and Supports for Youth Who Are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex, or Two-Spirit (LGBTQI2-S).”

The Washington Post reported that LGBTI2-S is part of the Technical Assistance Partnership for Child and Family Mental Health, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Florida’s education commissioner Pam Stewart and Democrats, including Orlando Rep. Joe Saunders, reject the claim the organization wants to indoctrinate public school students to be homosexual, according to an AP report.

In a press release Tuesday, Suanders called Van Zant’s accusation appalling and demanded an apology.

The Common Core initiative, which is under fire in most of the 44 states where it has been accepted, promotes the one-size-fits-all mentality of the Obama Administration and has come under withering attack in Florida. Van Zant’s remarks struck home with many concerned parents.
