Until he started the job, FBI director believed Obama’s BS about diminished terrorism too

When it comes to terrorism’s threats, even the FBI director got snowed by the White House.

In a head-shaking New York Times report Monday, FBI Director James Comey tells the paper he came into office last year thinking, “based on news media reports, that the threat from Al Qaeda was diminished.”

“But nine months into his tenure as director,” The Times writes, “Mr. Comey acknowledges that he underestimated the threat the United States still faces from terrorism.”

Without a trace of irony, The Times lets the blame for Comey’s ignorance fall on “news media reports,” but where did those reports come from?

Maybe it was from President Obama himself, who not only ran a re-election campaign based on his purported success at battling terrorism, but actually gave a much-discussed speech at National Defense University last year where he proclaimed,  Canute-like, that the war that was brought home to American soil in 2001 was over.

“We have to recognize that the scale of the threat resembles the types of attacks we faced before 9/11,” Obama declared.

Not really, Comey found. As The Times reports:

Based on what he now knows, Mr. Comey said, he is convinced that terrorism should remain the main focus of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The agency he inherited from Mr. Mueller had roughly half its 16,000 agents and analysts working on national security issues, and Mr. Comey made it clear that he would not be changing those priorities.

In other words, the Obama adminsitration’s spin that Al Qaeda was on the run after the death of Osama bin Laden was a yarn – spun to protect a president who managed to be around the White House in May, 2011, when Navy Seals were killing Osama bin Laden but curiously absent when bin Laden’s terrorist successors were killing Americans in Benghazi, Libya, in September 2012.

This is a president who as a candidate once told Newsweek reporter Richard Wolffe, “You know, I actually believe my own bullshit.”

Apparently, his FBI director did, too.
