Marco Rubio dances around question on whether he ever smoked pot

Prospective presidential hopeful, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said he doesn’t believe there is a “responsible way to recreationally use marijuana,” but he wouldn’t say whether he ever smoked it.

Rubio told ABC’s Jonathan Karl that he is opposed to the legalization of marijuana in a “Politics Confidential” interview released Monday.

“If you say that you did, then suddenly there are people out there saying, ‘Well, it’s not a big deal,’” the senator said. “On the other side of it is, if you tell people that you didn’t, they won’t believe you.”

After revealing in his book, “American Son,” that he didn’t do well in high school and carried a 2.1 GPA, he experienced an encounter that made him uncomfortable.

“Someone came up to me and said, ‘You know, I enjoyed your book, but I want you to know, my son came up to me and said he doesn’t have to get good grades in high school, because look at Marco Rubio — he didn’t do well in high school and look how successful he’s been,’” Rubio recalled. “And that impacted me.”

Clips of the interview, filmed in New Hampshire, was previously shown Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.” For that segment, see “Marco Rubio: I’m ready to be president; Hillary will be held accountable.”
