Van Susteren plays 911 tape that could help free US Marine jailed in Mexico

An audio tape of a 9-1-1 call made by a U.S. Marine mistakenly jailed in Mexico has suddenly surfaced, which his mother says unequivocally proves his innocence.

In an interview with Greta van Susteren on Fox’s “On the Record” Friday, Jill Tahmooressi, distraught mother of Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi’s, played the tape which highlights her son’s appeal to the emergency operator as soon as he accidentally crossed into Mexico on March 31st. At the time, he was carrying three guns in his pickup truck and was immediately arrested by border authorities for the violation.

He has been in jail ever since, despite pleas by the State Department and Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., for his quick release.

In the tape, the two-tour Afghanistan veteran explains that he missed the turn-around exit and mistakenly entered America’s southern neighbor. The 9-1-1 operator replies that he’s on Mexican soil and there’s nothing she can do.

Meanwhile, Tahmooressi has been held in terrible conditions and frantic family’s efforts to gain his release have not proven successful. His mother described his treatment as “tragic, near fatal; he was almost killed; he had to escape a certain execution and then he was shackled in a chained 4-point restraint for 35 days.”

Tahmooressi was recently transferred to a safer, Mexican federal prison, and Rep. Hunter has asked Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to suspend all American military aid and intelligence operations with Mexico until the Marine is freed, according to Fox News.

Jill Tahmooressi told van Susteren that the State Dept. has not reacted to this latest finding on behalf of her son, other than sympathizing from the American consulate in Tijuana. It seems the tension, pressure and stress had traumatized the 25-year-old Marine for seven weeks until he suddenly remembered his 9-1-1 phone call and told his sister via telephone on Wednesday.

Tahmooressi is scheduled to appear before a magistrate on May 28th.
