The head of a California company who fled Vietnam more than 30 years ago to escape communism says there is “not a big difference” between government in America and his home country.

“Today, I feel almost the same,” Huy Fong Foods president Davis Tran told NPR. “Even now, we live in the USA, and my feeling, the government, not a big difference.”

Huy Fong Foods, maker of the popular Sriracha hot sauce, has been locked in a dispute with the city of Irwindale, Calif., over the smell coming from its factory.

City officials contend the odor is a health risk to local residents, even though the city gave the company a low-interest loan to move there in the beginning, according to the Orange County Register.

A judge has already forced the company to close part of the factory, and city officials tried last month to have the facility declared a public nuisance, The Daily Caller reported.

The conflict prompted Texas lawmakers to travel to the Golden State to lure Huy Fong to move operations to the Lone Star state — according to NPR, it’s an $80 million business.

Tran, who referred to the plant as his “loved one” in an interview with NPR, does not want to relocate, but may open another facility outside Southern California.

Somewhere with fewer regulations.
