In an effort to help a fellow Hispanic, a Democratic state lawmaker in New Mexico sent an email to his colleagues urging them not to support “Anglo Democrats.”
Looking for an edge in his campaign, Frank Otero, a Democrat running for state house, spoke with state Rep. Miguel Garcia, D-Albuquerque, who was only too eager to help out.
We talked on the phone, he said he really wanted to help me and help my campaign,” Otero told KRQE News 13.

Twitter outrage: ‘Our society is twisted’
Garcia did so by sending an email to fellow Democrats in the state legislature on Monday in support of Otera and another Hispanic candidate. But the email also included a racially charged attack on their white primary opponents.
KRQE reported that the email stated, in part:
A minority of unsuspecting Democratic leaders are supporting the Democratic Anglo newcomer opponents in Andrew’s and Frank’s primary races. Anglo Democrats with egos as big as Texas, mouths as big as the Grand Canyon, and much “green” [moolah] from the East and the West Coast.
As it turns out, Otera decided this is not the kind of help he had in mind.
“I just don’t believe in that,” he said. “My grandmother was half-Hispanic and half-Anglo. Some of those comments are offensive even to my family. Those kind of comments just don’t fly in any capacity.”
Speaker Ken Martinez, a fellow Democrat, told the CBS affiliate that he was “a little troubled” by Garcia’s comment.
But Garcia has a perfectly good excuse for his actions.
“I did not send the email to the media,” he wrote in a text message to KRQE.
