Freak wind gust sends bounce house with kids flying 50 ft in the air; two children injured

A freak wind vortex sent an inflatable “bounce house” with three children inside spinning up to 50 feet in the air, injuring two seriously.

The accident occurred on Tuesday in South Glens Falls, NY. A 10-year-old girl near the entrance-way fell out quickly after the ascent began, and suffered only minor scrapes. But the two boys, aged 5 and 6, went for a terrifying ride before tumbling out from about a height of 15 feet, witnesses told the Post-Star.

One youngster landed on the asphalt while the second slammed into a parked car, with one incurring two broken arms and facial lacerations and the other sustaining a traumatic head injury. The floating playhouse finally returned to earth, three blocks away.

One witness, Taylor Seymour, told the Post-Star reporter that the gust of wind “picked the structure up and spun it around as if it was in a small tornado.”

“It was like a horror movie,” she said. “It just kept going up and up. It cleared our buildings and trees.”

Adults who were supervising the play area told police that all the proper steps for securing the colorful playpen were taken, and no charges are expected to be pressed.

The manufacturer, MGA Entertainment, expressed sorrow at the accident and said it would investigate the mishap. However, as the popularity of the product grows, these types of accidents are becoming more frequent, according to the Post-Star.
