It will be a cold day in hell before former NBA great Charles Barkley apologizes to the professionally offended class for joking comments he made last week about overweight San Antonio women.
For sports fans who’ve spent the past three days learning more than they ever wanted to know about future defensive backs locking lips with their homosexual lovers during the NFL draft , Barkley provided some welcome relief Sunday night when he publicly responded to criticism of his string of fat jokes about the Texas town’s distaff half:
Being Charles Barkley means never having to say you’re sorry.
“If you don’t like me or the show, turn it off,” Barkley said with unassailable logic. “And they want me to apologize. That’s not going to happen. That’s not gonna happen. You all can write letters to your momma, your daddy, your uncle. I’m going to have fun on television. You know that I’m joking around.
“But if y’all waiting on me to apologize, hell gonna freeze over.”
Everybody get that? He’s not going to apologize.
And thank the Lord.
Between the Miami Dolphins actually punishing a defensive back for posting a Twitter message registering disgust with St. Louis draft pick Michael Sam’s nationally televised kiss of his gay lover and the National Basketball Association’s push to make Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling sell the team because of racist comments he was taped making, it was starting to look like America was stuck in an abusive relationship with the very sports stars the country looks for to distract us from the disaster Democrats have wrought since the unfortunate election in 2008 and the even more disastrous result of 2012.
A major sports figure would be caught making an offensive statement – whether through a secretly taped conversation or a no-holds-barred television commentary. A public outcry would ensue, the sports figure apologizes, hypocritically, dishonestly or fearfully. Everybody hits the bar knowing another nail of nonsense has been driven into the coffin of American character.
But Sir Charles wouldn’t play along. The man was joking. He knew he was joking and he knew everyone else knew it, too. And he wasn’t going to pretend otherwise.
First, if you haven’t seen it yet, check out the segment that landed Barkley in trouble for his televised comments.
Now, watch him in action Sunday.
It’s an almost sensual pleasure to hear someone tell the PC police to shove it the way Barkley did.
If Barkley apologized now, it woud be a cold day day under indeed.
