Minimum wage hike has severe consequences for vets; forces some to leave nursing homes

The Law of Unintended Consequences continues to plague President Obama’s rapid-fire executive decisions, as he boldly attempts to transform American society and circumvent the legislative branch. Its latest manifestations severely impact the lives of our nation’s veterans, both current and past.

On military bases, fast food contractors are prohibited from raising the prices of their products, and are required to include a serious benefits package to all employees. By forcing them to pay higher wages without an offsetting mechanism, their bottom line is wiped out and they are forced to either eliminate jobs or go out of business altogether, Fox News reported.

When the president stumped the country promoting his “living wage” theme, did he consider he might increase unemployment lines rather than reduce them?

Similarly, nursing home operators who contract with the Veterans Administration receive a subsidy which allows them to remain in business. By forcing them to raise wages, they can no longer afford to provide services to veterans and must exit the government health care system. Ergo, resident veterans have to find another place to live.

“The additional labor expenses are simply unaffordable,” explained Gamble Guest Care Chief Operating Officer Matt Machen, who runs eight facilities. “As such, many long term care providers have indicated that they will no longer seek or renew V.A. contracts,” KTBS reported. – Shreveport, LA News, Weather and Sports

“There’s a lot of people out there who have fought for our country,” said Vickie Carrington, fighting back the tears. She’ll be taking her dad home with her from a Shreveport, La., nursing home, but she asked, “The ones that don’t have family members to take them in to take care of them, where are they going to go?”

President Obama, who never served in the military nor ever ran a business, probably didn’t consider the ramifications of his feel-good sound bite, when he smilingly announced he would give away other people’s money. But somebody has to pay the piper to play the tune.
