U.S. Capitol Police are investigating threats made against U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., following his selection to head a select committee on Benghazi.

According to Politico, two threatening emails were received by members of the media warning that Gowdy would be harmed as a result of his involvement in investigating the attack on the American consulate in 2012.

Law enforcement confirmed that there is “an active, open investigation,” but offered no other comments, Politico reported.

House Speaker John Boehner Monday tapped Gowdy, who has a background as a prosecutor, to lead the select committee, saying in a statement that he is “as dogged, focused, and serious-minded as they come.”

The second term congressman raised eyebrows last week when he said of the Obama administration’s response to the Benghazi attack, “I have evidence that there was a systematic, intentional decision to withhold certain documents from Congress.”

Gowdy has faced threats before. Politico reported that a woman approached Gowdy in 2012 with a gun while he was sitting in his car. In addition, a South Carolina prison inmate pled guilty to sending threatening messages in 2009.
