Texas elementary school student says teacher took away her Bible during reading time

Controversy is brewing in a Texas elementary school where the family of a second-grader accused a teacher of taking the girl’s Bible away during “read to myself” time two weeks ago.

Instead of calling the school, the family contacted the  Liberty Institute asking to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, according to Houston TV station KHOU.

“Hamilton Elementary’s own library contains copies of the Bible and books about Bible stories,” Michael Berry, the Liberty Institute’s senior counsel, told KHOU. “So if it’s appropriate for their own library, why on Earth would it not be appropriate for students?”

Parents of students had mixed reactions over the allegation.

“They are letting them read the ‘Hunger Games,’” parent Jennifer Muse told KHOU, adding, though, that she was disappointed the parents didn’t contact the school directly. “That’s kids killing kids. Why can’t she read the Bible?”

Another parent told the TV station the teacher did the right thing, adding, “There should be a definite separation.”

The school district said it was unaware of the alleged incident and only heard of it through the media, according to KHOU, which reported:

In a statement, it said that during a student’s independent reading time, kids are required to read a book that is “just right,” meaning kids can read most of the words, comprehend the text, and that it’s appropriate for the genre that is being taught.

No lawsuits have been filed, and the incident is being investigated by the school district.
