Dad ‘breaks up’ with rap music for sake of his daughters, but misses the real point

A national blogger on parenting has sparked a national conversation about a real “war against women” being waged in this country – and he’s doing it on behalf of his two young daughters.

On the liberal Huffington Post “Parents” blog, contributor Mike Heenan wrote in “An Open Letter to Rap Music (for My Daughters)” that rap’s days in the life of his family are over.

“It’s your rampant misogyny, homie. It is an epidemic,” Heenan wrote. “Your unapologetic sexism is a scourge on an otherwise exceptional cultural phenomenon.”

It’s not that Heenan never liked rap before. In the letter, he admitted a wayward youth when he could be found “in the club, bottle full of bub.”

“I ‘like big butts and I cannot lie,’” he wrote.

But that man has two daughters now, and parenthood has clearly changed his view of the role of girls and women.

On Saturday’s “Fox and Friends Weekend,” host?? Anna Kooiman said Heenan’s blog made her long for the days of Motown, Aretha Franklin and “R-E-S-P-E-C-T.” (Check it out here.)

The resulting debate makes for an interesting conversation. But it doesn’t go far enough. Fox personality Peter Johnson Jr. predicted that Heenan’s post will cause the blogger trouble among his fellow liberals.

“This father’s going to be pilloried … that he ‘doesn’t really understand the cultural implications of rap music,” Johnson said. “That rap music is really an endearing force in our society and it should be cherished.”

Johnson’s not quite right. Heenan might raise some eyebrows, but liberal pillorying is reserved for politics, and Heenan’s letter is confined strictly to rap music. It ignores the culture of single motherhood (a liberal fantasy) that created the blighted urban worldview imbues rap’s misogyny; it pretends the liberal politics that produced that culture doesn’t exist.

In other words, Heenan assailed the symptom of rap music, while ignoring the liberal philosophy that produced a world where slavery has been outlawed for 150 years, but where a large class of people — women — are chattel in everything but name.

So Heenan won’t be pilloried. He might even be defended by liberals who have no problem with a man wanting to keep his family intact while a pro-family culture collapses around him. They might think his taste in music is improving.

But his daughters are still going to grow up in a screwed-up world applauded by liberals like the Huffington Post’s staffers – and probably Heenan himself.
