The latest feud over Obama has Hollywood wags clamoring, as billionaire casinos owner Steve Wynn and mega-star George Clooney got into it in Las Vegas recently.
The two traded harsh verbal jabs after arguing over President Obama’s competency, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. During dinner in the posh Botero Restaurant in Wynn’s Encore Hotel, the subject eventually turned to politics.
“I was explaining how upset the union is with the health care act, and George didn’t like hearing it,” Wynn said. Clooney responded that “the president is a longtime friend of mine,” to which Wynn said, “Your friend is an ‘a-hole.'”
Clooney, famous for his liberal politics both on and off screen, took umbrage at the insult, and defended his friend Obama. “At that point I told Steve that HE was an a–hole and I wasn’t going to sit at his table while he was being such a jackass. And I walked out,” he told the Review.
TMZ reported that the actor snapped and started throwing F-bombs.
The pair had been dining together because Clooney was promoting his new brand of tequila, Casamigos, which is served at Wynn’s hotels. Wynn related that the movie star had downed 16 shots of tequila.
Rande Gerber, Clooney’s partner in the tequila venture, also was seated at the table and denied that his buddy was drunk. Gerber said, “No shots were had at all.”
Wynn countered and told the Review, “When he’s [George] drinking, he considers himself a close personal buddy of the President…Clooney’s fun to be with when he’s sober … If you have a chance to drink with him, you want to get there early, and don’t stay late.”
Clooney, on the other hand, said the brief spat was of a different nature. He was quoted by TMZ as saying, “It had nothing to do with politics and everything to do with character.”
As one of the serious magnates in Las Vegas, Wynn summarized the incident with perspective. “Everybody who’s in my business — the casino business — knows to take actors with a grain of salt.”
Folks at TMZ thought the spat was “the greatest fight in Vegas history.” For a country steeped in celebrity-itis, the juicy quarrel offered up a tasty bone to chew on.
