“Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak might have bought himself more than a vowel with last week’s comic Twitter post announcing his heterosexuality to the world.
Damn the career consequences! I’m hereby proclaiming my heterosexuality!
— Pat Sajak (@patsajak) April 18, 2014
He bought himself some blowback from gays who didn’t see the humor in the announcement at all. Here are a couple of some of the more printable responses his announcement drew (most seem to have been written on high school bathroom walls before being transferred to Twitter posts.)
.@patsajak Congrats on proclaiming your #heterosexuality. Such an example to set for the ranks of str8 ppl, repressed by…no-one. #LGBT — Will Fordham (@corvocuore) April 21, 2014
Repressed by “no one” might be stretching it a little. Mozilla co-founder Brendan Eich might have been feeling a little repressed when he was forced out of the company he helped build earlier this month solely for having political opinions that don’t match those currently acceptable by the chattering classes.
@patsajak Sorry that you were bullied & tortured growing up for your sexuality. You are a real role model for those who have been suicidal! — Guerry Tanner (@coastalguy7) April 21, 2014
I hope Pat Sajak can someday live without a fear of being ostracized, bullied, tormented, fired, or killed just for being heterosexual. — Erik++ (@torgospizza) April 21, 2014
And that is genuinely too bad.
No sane person, which is to say no conservative, defends bullying people. But bullying those who look differently or act differently is passé in the Age of Obama.
Today it’s reserved for those who think differently from the established orthodox. Bullying is what liberals/progressives (or whatever they call themselves on Tuesdays) have been doing for decades through the entertainment-media complex; it’s what they’ve been doing for half a decade through the media-political complex.
And it’s what Sajak was targeting when he sent out that Tweet.
Fortunately, many in the Twitter world understood that.
The Liberals chastising @patsajak seem to have forgotten what they and gays did to the CEO of @Mozilla. How soon the bigots forget. — QUIRKY and BOSSY (@CoFemale) April 22, 2014
I am straight and proud of it too @PatSajak. Let the bigots on the left wallow in their bigotry and eat crow when they get someone fired. — QUIRKY and BOSSY (@CoFemale) April 22, 2014
More to the point, we might now live in a world where sexuality is no longer confined to the closet, but can we at least agree it should still be confined to the bedroom? It’s the endless preoccupation with surface sexuality in our media and politics — and the endless self-promotion that it entails — that Sajak was making fun of, not any individual’s preferences.
@ta2t2o @patsajak Should a sexual preference rather gay,straight or somewhere in between need an announcement or a label? — ♔Maliheh♔ (@Maliheh_) April 21, 2014 Good question.
@Maliheh_ Exactly the point. 🙂
