A Republican candidate for the Florida legislature is under fire for having made a $500 contribution to a Democratic Congressional candidate in 2008. And it wasn’t just any candidate — it was Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Democratic National Committee chair and arguably the Princess of Darkness to many conservatives.
This may have gone unnoticed by a national publication like The Huffington Post, except Julio Gonzalez, who’s embroiled in a GOP primary battle for the District 74 House seat against Richard DeNapoli, offered the flimsiest of excuses for making the donation — to defeat Obamacare, according to Media Trackers.
The problem is on the date of the donation, Obamacare was barely a twinkle in Obama’s eye — he had yet to win the Democratic presidential primary, let alone be elected president and initiate a domestic policy.
He was just a little-known guy running against Hillary Clinton, the person then considered most likely to be the Democratic presidential nominee.

Federal Election Commission records show Julio Gonzalez gave a $500 contribution to Debbie Wasserman Schultz on April 28, 2008. Barack Obama did not clinch the Democratic nomination until June of 2008. Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Healthcare Act, would not become law until 2010. But in explanations to local Republican groups, Gonzalez paints a vivid picture of going toe-to-toe with Wasserman Schultz in a heated argument over Obamacare.
Gonzalez claimed that at the time he made the contribution, “There was hundreds and hundreds of doctors fighting against Obamacare,” according to a transcript Media Trackers received of his explanation to various Republican clubs in the district. “I, I was one of them. I did numerous trips to Washington D.C. where we went to argue against Obamacare.”
Gonzalez, an orthopedic surgeon, said he was a member of a contingent of physicians on a mission.
Gonzalez said he met with every member of Congress he could, “including Debbie Wasserman Schultz.” He said the meetings were set up by his fellow physicians.
“They asked me to be involved in it,” Gonzalez said, “The condition was, we all had to put in $500, we all put in $500.”
Donating $500 to Wasserman Schultz doesn’t sit well with most conservatives, despite the excuse. There are certain Democrats who, no matter what the circumstances, Republicans should avoid supporting. These include U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, and Wasserman Schultz.
