Rep. Gohmert delivers withering attack on ‘childish and lame’ Eric Holder

Louie Gohmert went on a tear.

The Texas Republican rep. whose clash with Attorney General Eric Holder last week caused a splash that landed well outside the Washington Beltway attacked Holder Tuesday as “childish and lame”for implicitly accusing critics of racism for simply trying to get at the truth.

Rep. Louie Gohmert and Attorney General Eric Holder.

The two men tangled April 9 during a House Judiciary Committee meeting when Gohmert observed that the idea of being held in contempt of Congress didn’t seem to be a “big deal” to Holder.

“You don’t want to go there, buddy,” Holder responded, sparking a tense exchange that ended only when Gohmert’s allotted time had expired. Holder then went on to speak to an Al Sharpton-friendly audience at the National Action Network, complaining that no attorney general had been treated as badly he’d been.

In Tuesday night’s conference call, Gohmert’s description of the attorney general was withering.

“I know what it’s like to be in the heat of a very nasty conversation. I perhaps have been in those kinds of conversations more than our attorney general,” Gohmert said, according to the Daily Caller. “And that’s why his comments were so childish and lame.”

Gohmert said Holder’s behavior – in office and at the Judiciary hearing — had undermined the whole role of an attorney general as the head of a Justice Department that’s supposed to serve the country, not the administration. It’s a question of credibility, Gohmert said.

“They need Eric Holder as attorney general to look completely above the fray, completely objective, for when they need him to go out and say there’s not a smidgeon of corruption in the IRS. He exposed who he is and tried to come after who I am … He has shown himself to be quite partisan and extremely petty. They need him to appear credible when he isn’t.”

Holder has tried – implausibly – to claim he wasn’t talking about race in his National Action Network speech. (Is anything at an Al Sharpton event not about race?) But Gohmert argued that “racism” has become the go-to liberal story line of post-racial Obama Era.

“What I’ve seen in recent years is, many times, if someone uses the word racism then it is the word of last resort,” Gohmert said. “We no longer have a proper defensible position, we no longer have a moral basis on which to stand, so all we can do is yell racism or bigotry or gender-hatred …

“When you hear those kinds of things your ears better perk up and you should look for facts … They have no basis, all they have left is to scream racism and bigotry.”
