MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry praised the accomplishments of Attorney General Eric Holder Saturday, while lamenting that he had done what she hoped President Obama would do.
Harris-Perry said that Obama hasn’t had major legislative achievements like Lyndon Johnson’s civil rights act, but he did appoint an attorney general who has “aggressively enforced existing civil rights law.”
Holder also took action to correct past errors, including shortening prison sentences for nonviolent drug offenders, suing Texas and North Carolina over voter ID laws and issuing directive expanding government recognition of same sex marriages, according to Harris-Perry.
“Is Eric Holder the Obama that we had been hoping for?” she asked. “But of course, he works for Obama. It’s not really fair to separate them.”
Panel member Christina Greer of Fordham University said Holder is the “greatest addition to the entire Obama administration.”
Many people are disappointed in the president, Greer said, but Holder’s actions were going to help Obama’s legacy over the next five to ten years.
The panel was critical of the treatment Holder has received after Harris-Perry showed the exchange between Holder and U.S. Rep. Louis Gohmert, R-Texas, that drew attention last week.
