Rapper Jay-Z caused a small kerfuffle at a Brooklyn Nets basketball game last week, when he was seen wearing a large medallion representing the racist Five Percent Nation.

The sect, an offshoot of the Nation of Islam, espouses that all white people are “weak and wicked,” inferior to black men, that the Christian god is but a ghost and that 5 percent of humanity are “poor righteous teachers” trying to enlighten the rest of the world about the truth of existence, according to the New York Post.
Photographed sitting next to his wife, Beyonce, Jay-Z — born Shawn Corey Carter — was asked by a reporter if the neckwear meant something to him.
“A little bit,” he shrugged, the British Daily Mail Online reported.
Jay-Z was also seen wearing the medallion last summer while promoting his new album, “Magna Carta Holy Grail.” But the record producer’s choice of jewelry displeased followers of Five Percent Nation.
“Jay-Z is not an active member – no one has vouched for him,” sect spokesman Saladin Allah told the New York Post. “It was always understood that you don’t wear the regalia if you don’t totally subscribe to the life.”
Author Michael Muhammed Knight said the sect has a very distinct belief in God.
“The rationale is that the black man is God and created the universe, and is physically stronger and intellectually stronger and more righteous naturally,” Knight told the Post. “The idea is empowering.”
The coaster-sized medallion — an eight-pointed star with the number seven in the middle – symbolizes the sect’s alphabet, with seven representing God.
Jay-Z may not be an adequate representative of Five Percent Nation, but with a net worth of over $500 million, according to Forbes’ 2012 calculations, he does a powerful job representing himself.
