Raise taxes on the childless? ‘Fox and Friends’ panel tackles controversial suggestion

One columnist believes he’s come up with a way to increase government funding without hurting families: Raise taxes on the childless.

Reihan Salam suggested in a Slate.com column that taxes should be slashed for working parents.

“Who should pay more?” Salam wrote in last week’s column. “Nonparents who earn more than the median household income, just a shade above $51,000. By shifting the tax burden from parents to nonparents, we will help give America’s children a better start in life, and we will help correct a simple injustice.”

The deck is stacked against parents in many ways, from work opportunities to leisure activities, he wrote.

“Most obviously, the nonparent has far more disposable income to play with, which she can save, to become much richer than her parent counterpart over time, or spend, to travel to exotic locales, to eat out constantly, to wear awesome clothes, or to live as I do in a conveniently located shoebox in a great American metropolis,” he wrote.

Not everyone agrees.

In the comments section of the article, “@graygray” wrote:

For the sake of the planet we should be doubling taxes for the 3rd and more children and reducing taxes for the childless. Does no one understand that we are already past the sustainable population for planetary resources. No economic argument can outweigh global collapse.

You can’t please everyone.

Salam is a conservative author and commentator who thinks the Republican Party is “out of touch with its own base,” and encourages others to “read people with whom they disagree to challenge their settled views,” according to Wikipedia.

When the column became a point of discussion among a “Fox and Friends” panel Sunday, one panelist said the burden should go to the “top 1 percent.”
