Notion that Congress is underpaid didn’t sit well with Trey Gowdy

U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C. called the notion that members of Congress are underpaid at $174,000 per year “laughable” during his Friday appearance “On the Record”

Gowdy was referring to recent remarks made by U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., when he complained that Congressional pay had been frozen for three years, and a Republican bill would freeze it for yet another year.

“I would be embarrassed to say that given our job performance and our salary, that we are anything other than grossly overcompensated.” Gowdy told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren.

He added that colleagues on both sides of the aisle feel the same way.

“Mr. Moran may feel that way, but I’ve talked to plenty of Democrats and Republicans, today, after he said what he said, and he is a majority of one if he believes that,” Gowdy said.

He said even if Congress were doing a good job, “public service means you give something up, you get compensation in other ways.” As an example, he noted that members get the benefit “of being a part of history.”

Van Susteren said she wouldn’t have a problem with a salary hike if Congress were doing a good job. Gowdy disagreed.

“Don’t run for office and then complain about the salary because you know what it is when you filed,” he concluded.
