A Democratic congressman is having trouble making ends meet on his paltry $14,500 monthly stipend and feels the need for a little love — in the form of a pay raise.
Virginia’s James P. Moran plans to correct the injustice by introducing an amendment to a bill introduced by House Republicans that would freeze members’ salaries at $174,000, according to Roll Call.
“I think the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid,” Moran told Roll Call. “I understand that it’s widely felt that they underperform, but the fact is that this is the board of directors for the largest economic entity in the world.”
Moran’s analogy needs a little work. Corporations sell goods and services people actually want.
Officers and board members are rewarded when they do a good job — and their company spreadsheets reflect an increase in profits and efficiency. They’re not paid to underperform.
Roll Call reported:
The senior appropriator pointed out that some members have taken to living out of their offices to save money, while others have “small little apartment units” that make it impossible to spend the time they should with their families.
Most state legislatures provide their members with a per diem allowance, Moran argues, so the federal government should do the same.
“Our pay has been frozen for three years and we’re planning on freezing it a fourth year,” Moran said. “A lot of members can’t even afford to live decently in Washington.”
Moran has been a member of Congress for over 20 years. He’s as good an excuse as any for term limits.
