The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling Wednesday striking down some limits on individual campaign spending won’t just affect a small group of wealthy donors. It could also help Republican efforts to take the Senate during President Obama’s last two years in office.
And that means it will affect everybody – no matter how much money you have.
“When the Supreme Court said ‘the First Amendment does not protect the government,’ it meant that the First Amendment protects our speech as individuals and citizens,” Republican National Committee Deputy Communications Director Sarah Isgur Flores said in an email to BizPac Review.
The case was filed by Alabama Republican activist Shaun McCutcheon, who challenged federal limits on how much individuals could donate to candidates and political parties. For fiscal year 2013-14, federal law capped donations at $123,200, with another $48,600 limit on contributions to candidates.
That’s not exactly tip money, of course. So the number of people whose activities are going to be affected is probably even smaller than MSNBC’s viewing audience at any given moment. But the ruling could broaden political free speech well into the fall campaigns.
“How this will affect 2014 is that we’re talking about expanding the field of competitive races,” Flores wrote. “Before today, large dollar donors could only support nine candidates. Well this year, we have at least 14 competitive Senate races … and all we need are six to win back the Senate.”
There’s not a conservative in the country who doesn’t like the sound of that – not after seeing the wreckage brought by five years of Barack Obama in the White House and his co-dependent Harry Reid in the Senate majority leader’s office.
“So even if it means that you aren’t one of those donors, it means that we can have more competitive elections around the country,” Flores wrote. “There’s no such thing as a write off race … If you’re a fan of democracy, you’re a fan of this outcome.”
