With April Fool’s Day now behind us, there were some great pranks floating around the Internet Tuesday, many with a heavy marketing theme. Leave it to the capitalists to find yet another opportunity to plug their goods.
We begin with the introduction of “CarSelfies,” from CarGurus CEO Langley Steinert: “The selfie may already be the pinnacle of human expression, but now CarGurus is taking it to the next level by helping your car get in on the action.”
The “breakthrough” technology takes advantage of cars equipped with backup cameras to produce “selfies” of participating motorists. A must have in today’s social media driven world.
Visit St. Pete-Clearwater also got in on the fun, announcing the sighting of a “Manaphin” — a mythical dolphin-manatee hybrid.
A press release from the tourism office said the creature resembled “both the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus)”and was spotted by a kayaker from Chicago, according to ABC News.
“I’ve seen both manatees and dolphins many times,” the kayaker said in the release. “But this was different — the thing moved like a dolphin but had the head of a manatee. It was pretty cool.”
There were countless videos taking advantage of today’s technology to prank unsuspecting viewers, and market their products at the same time. Here are a few:
Samuel Adams HeliYUM: “Lightened from heavier gases like CO2, HeliYum takes advantages of the properties of helium — one of the noble gases — for a truly remarkable brew.”
Puppy Connect: “At American Well, we’ve perfected the art of connecting you with doctors over your computer, phone or tablet. When we added nutritionists to our system, we saw how quickly people embraced video chatting with different types of providers. Puppies seemed like the natural next step.”
Rosetta Stone: Klingon: “Klingon may be a difficult language for humans to wrap their smooth heads around, but now Rosetta Stone has made it even easier to avoid the constant threat of saying the wrong thing and accidentally landing in a battle to the death.”
And my personal favorite…
Fruit of the Loom: Undie Iron: “The world’s first underwear iron is here. Now positivity is at your fingertip.”
