Seniors stuck with commencement speaker ask: ‘Chris Matthews who?’

A captive audience might be the only kind MSNBC hosts can count on these days. But that doesn’t mean the audience is happy about it.

Students at Ohio State University are decidedly down on their school’s choice of inane lib and “Hardball” host Chris Matthews as the commencement speaker at May’s graduation ceremony, according to  the Columbus Dispatch.

The predictably progressive politics Matthews spouts are a distraction, of course. But the real problem is that basically Matthews is a nobody outside of the New York-Washington MSNBC viewing area.

“The response from students is simply that we don’t know who this guy is, we don’t care about this guy,” undergraduate student government President Taylor Stepp told the newspaper. “And the fact that Mr. Matthews obviously has a very liberal leaning, and he’s not even a public official, was irksome to me.”

(Last year’s speaker was President Obama. He’s almost as liberal as Matthews, of course, but besides being undeniably a public official,  most people have at least heard of him.) So how did the school come up with Matthews?

In contrast to the past, this year’s speaker was decided solely by Provost Joseph Steinmetz and his Office of Academic Affairs, with zero input from the student body, according to the Dispatch.

“Because of time constraints and leadership changes during the past year, the decision was made to use a more streamlined approach to speaker selection for spring 2014 commencement,” OSU spokesman Gary Lewis told the newspaper.

In other words, in true liberal top-down fashion, the decision about who the speaker would be was made over the heads of the thousands of Buckeye graduates – the people most affected by it. And surprise! They get stuck with a liberal they don’t want any part of.

The provost’s office told the Dispatch it will name a committee of OSU students and staff this semester to come up with a speaker for next year’s commencement ceremony. They might want to check with Fox to see if Megyn Kelly’s free.
