Probe launched over firefighter handcuffed during 911 call

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office launched an investigation this week after a fire-rescue worker was handcuffed and detained while reviving a victim lying on the floor of her home.

A volunteer fire-rescue officer was the first to arrive on the scene Monday night in response to an emergency call. Paramedics arrived soon after, followed by a police officer who demanded that the firefighter remove his truck, according to, Baton Rouge.

The firefighter refused — he was still rendering aid to the patient. That’s when the police officer handcuffed the firefighter and placed him in his squad car.

Much of this was confirmed by t Amber Porter, the patient.

“I was walking toward the kitchen and just passed out,” Porter said.

A relative of Porter was at the home and immediately dialed 911. Porter credits the firefighter who arrived first for helping her.

“I was laying on the floor,” Porter told WBRZ. “They was calling my name. He was trying to sit me up off the floor.”

The timing of the arrival and arrest is confirmed by neighborhood surveillance footage. WBRZ reported:

Surveillance video from the New Roads Housing Authority captured everything on camera. The video is time stamped and shows the fireman was placed in the police car for 22 minutes before he was removed.

The police officer will not be disciplined for the incident, according to his chief, which does not sit well with Harris.

“I think he should get fired or suspended,” Porter told WBRZ. “Something should happen to him because who just arrests somebody? He was helping me. He wasn’t just parking his car to park it.”
