Former Vice President Dick Cheney defended the Bush administration’s use of enhanced interrogation techniques during a speech he’d made Thursday night at American University.
“If I would have to do it all over again, I would,” Cheney told the gathering, according to “The Eagle,” the school newspaper. “The results speak for themselves.”
The event, hosted by the university’s Kennedy Political Union, was protested by students who called Cheney a war criminal.
“The accusations are not true,” Cheney said.
Three individuals, including 9/11 mastermind khalid sheikh mohammed, were waterboarded during the Bush administration’s engagement of its wat on terror. The enhanced interrogation reportedly led to the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden.
Waterboarding simulates drowning by pouring water over the subjects mouth and nose.
“Some people called it torture. It wasn’t torture,” Cheney said in an interview with ATV, the student-run TV station.
Cheney addressed other, more current issues during an interview with The Eagle, including the weak response of the Obama administration to events in Syria and Crimea.
“The president indicated that if the Syrians used chemical weapons there would be consequence,” he said. “They used chemical weapons and there were no consequences. That conveyed a sense of weakness; that you don’t have to pay attention to what he [the president] says because he won’t follow through.”
The event was interrupted by some students walking out while shouting “War criminal!” as depicted in this video via NewsToShare. Also, be sure to check out “‘Lunch lady said I can’t pray,’ 5-year-old tells her parents.”
