School had mom arrested for bypassing protocol to help special-needs son in class

Missouri mom who went to school to console her special-needs son found herself in handcuffs after entering the boy’s classroom.

Niakea Williams received a phone call Thursday from the school alerting her that her son, who has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, was experiencing a panic attack, according to TV station KMOV.

She said she rushed to the Walnut Grove Elementary School, and officials buzzed her inside the building.

“I saw a teacher and she said, ‘Ms. Williams what is wrong?’” Williams told KMOV. “I said, ‘Something is wrong with Mikey’ and proceeded to go straight to my son.”

As Williams attended to her son, she said, the principal came in and told her she had violated school policy by not signing in at the office.

“I didn’t sign the book, but I had to check on my son,” Williams said. “You can bring me the book. She said, ‘Oh no, I’ve already called the police.’ You called what?”

Calverton Park Police responded to the report of an “unauthorized entry to a school,” and the school was put on a 12-minute lockdown. Parents were alerted to the incident by a letter sent home with their children.

“They escorted me away from my son, who already has emotional distress,” a furious Williams said. “Four officers told me to turn around and put my hands behind my back, I was under arrest.”

Williams said she is a “known parent” and had met with the principal the day before on an unrelated issue. She was taken to the police station on trespassing charges.

Discretion should be used in such situations, Williams said, adding that her arrest was unnecessary.

“I feel like today I got arrested for being a concerned parent of my child,” she said.
