School superintendent refuses to remove workbook that outrageously distorts 2nd Amendment

The superintendent of the Illinois school district that teaches a politically distorted version of the right to bear arms sees nothing wrong with the flawed school workbook and accuses critics of being “people for whom the Second Amendment is a heartburn issue.”

School superintendent refuses to remove workbook with distorted 2nd Amendment lessonThe Springfield Public School District made headlines nationally last week with a story about a workbook for seventh-grade students that said the Second Amendment “states that people have the right to certain weapons, providing that they register them and they have not been in prison.”

That’s not at all what the Second Amendment states, of course. But Superintendent Bob Hill told radio station 970 WMAY on Monday he has no plans to change it.

“A lot of people who have called me have asked me to pull the book, which I told them I wouldn’t do,” he said. “Which is not the answer they want.”

Well, no, it’s not the answer they want, because what the workbook is teaching is factually wrong – but Hill claims that’s not the whole story.

“It’s an attempt to say, ‘here’s what happens with the right to bear arms in the context of 2014,’” Hill told the radio station. “To take a piece of written material like this and pull it out of the context in the classroom … actually is pretty unfair.”

Hill dismisses critics of the workbook as “mostly people for whom the Second Amendment is a heartburn issue.”

Well, here’s another “heartburn issue” for Superintendent Hill.

The 15th Amendment states:  “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”

Imagine if the school district in Springfield Illinois permitted a supplementary workbook to say the amendment “states that most people have a right to vote, providing they haven’t been in prison.”

That’s the “context” of the 15th Amendment in 2014 – just as it was the context when it was ratified in 1870.

But you can bet Al Sharpton, Attorney General Eric Holder and the gang at MSNBC would be making a “heartburn issue” out of that – and Superintendent Hill’s education career.

Meanwhile, on Fox and Friends on Tuesday, Judge Andrew Napolitano demolished Hill’s argument, noting that the superintendent is not only ignoring recent Supreme Court rulings on the Second Amendment but also comes from a liberal Democrat culture where the gun control is a fetish blind to reality. The nation’s strictest gun laws in Illinois haven’t stopped Chicago from leading the country in gun homicides, he said.
