School bars 9-year-old for shaving her head to support friend with cancer

No good deed goes unpunished.

Kamryn Renfro, left, and her friend Delaney Clements.

That was the lesson 9-year-old Kamryn Renfro learned this week when she shaved her head to show support for a friend undergoing chemotherapy – and got herself barred from school for her trouble.

Kamryn and her friend, Delaney Clements, are classmates at Caprock Academy, a charter school in Grand Junction, Colo. Delaney suffers from neuroblastoma – a deadly form of childhood cancer. She recently started chemo treatments that have caused her to lose her hair and Kamryn decided to keep her company so she wouldn’t be so lonely.

“I was really excited I would have somebody to support me and I wouldn’t be alone with people always laughing at me,” Delaney told 9NEWS in Denver. “I would at least have somebody to go through it all.”

Caprock officials didn’t see it that way and on Monday sent Kamryn home, telling her her bald head violated the school’s dress code, according to Fox 31.

“Caprock Academy does have a detailed dress code policy, which was created to promote safety, uniformity, and a non-distracting environment for the school’s students. Under this policy, shaved heads are not permitted,” the school’s chairwoman said in a statement.

Not even for a little girl who shaved her head so her friend wouldn’t feel so lonely fighting for her life.

Fortunately, cooler – and presumably covered – heads prevailed and Kamryn was to be allowed back into school on Tuesday, her mother told 9NEWS. School officials were going to meet Tuesday night to come up with a new policy, the station reported.

It’s good they came to their senses and everything, but it’s too bad it apparently took the public embarrassment of television stations broadcasting their stupidity to make Caprock administrators turn into decent human beings – the kind of person Kamryn was trying to be when she decided to stand by a friend in an hour of need.

“It felt like the right thing to do,” she told television reporter.

It shouldn’t take bad publicity to teach a lesson like that.
