Press covering Michelle’s China trip report being shoved, screamed at and banned from events

If the media wanted to endorse Michelle Obama’sBan Bossy” campaign, the security detail on the first lady’s spring break trip to China may be their first target.

Reporters in the press pool are reporting that they “have been blocked from events, screamed at by officials, held back with red tape and told not to move from prepositioned lookouts, possibly to avoid taking embarrassing photos,” according to the Washington Examiner.

A report Friday said the media received no information from officials as to “what the first lady and Chinese President Xi Jinping talked about or even ate during their dinner.”

On Sunday, reporters were forced to leave a large education event at the U.S. Embassy attended by educators, students and parents, according to the Examiner, which reported:

“Although pool photographers were allowed to take pictures of the roundtable, the names and bios of the participants have so far been withheld by the White House, and the pool was only allowed to hear roughly four minutes of opening comments by [U.S. Ambassador Max] Baucus and Obama,” said the pool report from the McClatchy Newspapers reporter. “News officers said they were not releasing names so participants could talk candidly with Obama about education issues.”During the first lady’s tour Monday of Xi’an, a city dating to the 14th century, the New York Times filed a pool report saying, “Event below marred for press by obnoxious Chinese advance man screaming and shoving us behind his ever moving red tape line.”

Sunday’s photo opportunity at the Great Wall was highly restricted in an effort to prevent photos of the
first lady standing near a massive rock inscription reading in Chinese, “Loyal to Chairman Mao,” according to the Examiner. To avoid further embarrassment, Chinese authorities also had local merchants suspend sales of a popular Obama-Mao t-shirt during her visit.

“Event below marred for press by obnoxious Chinese advance man screaming and shoving us behind his ever moving red tape line,” a New York Times report filed Monday said of the first lady’s tour of the city of Xi’an.
