A New Jersey teen managed to sneak past a guard to reach the top of what should be the most secure building in America – the World Trade Center.
At around 4 a.m. Sunday, 16-year-old Justin Casquejo managed to crawl through a hole in a chain link fence at Ground Zero, then caught a ride with an inept union elevator operator who failed to even ask for ID, according to the New York Post.
The teen got off on the 88th floor, climbed to the 104th, then snuck past a sleeping security guard to reach the spire. He hung around for two hours before a construction worker caught him.
“He came here and he ran hog wild,” a worker told The Post.
“Obviously, it was shocking and troubling,” Mayor Bill de Blasio told the Associated Press. “And I don’t know how possibly it could have happened.”
Casquejo laughed Wednesday afternoon when The Post asked him about his adventure.
“Ha ha, oh yeah, that. Right,” he told The Post. “I would really love to talk to you guys because I have a lot that I want to say about it. I was told that I just can’t [talk] without permission.”
A World Trade Center admirer, Casquejo bragged to police that it wasn’t hard to get past four levels of security into a building supposedly cloaked in a “ring of steel.”
The security guard lost his job, but the elevator operator was reassigned, protected by the union, according to The Post.
The site is guarded by the Port Authority Police Department, the New York Police Department, a private security company that patrol the building perimeter and another private company securing the interior, none of whom would give a comment to The Post.
Casquejo was “being held without bail after an arraignment Monday on a criminal trespassing charge,” according to the AP, his camera and cellphone seized.
He sent a tweet prior to the incident that just about summed it up:
A long way from home.
