Texas principal about to lose job over ‘English only’ policy

It looks as though the principal of a rural East Texas middle school having a 50 percent-plus Hispanic population will be losing her job at the end of the school year for instructing students to refrain from speaking Spanish while on campus.

The dispute arose in November when Hempstead Middle School Principal Amy Lacey made her “English only” announcement over the school PA system. That action resulted in the school board placing her on paid administrative leave the following month, according to the Houston Chronicle.

This week, the school board decided it will probably not renew Lacey’s contract.

“When you start banning aspects of ethnicity or cultural identity, it sends the message that the child is not wanted: ‘We don’t want your color. We don’t want your kind.’ They then tend to drop out early,” ” Augustin Pinedo, director of the League of United Latin American Citizens Region 18 told the Chronicle.

The Chronicle reported:

Such fast growth is pervasive in Texas, says Steve Murdock, a professor at Rice University and director of the Hobby Center for the Study of Texas. Half of all Texas public-school students are now Hispanic, he notes. “When you look at issues related to education in Texas, to a great extent, you’re looking at the education of Hispanic children.”

Similar growth patterns, he says, hold true for the rest of the United States: “It’s not just Texas.”

What’s lost in these arguments is the fundamental purpose of a public school system — to prepare our young men and women to assume their place in American society. Doing so requires one to be functionally literate in English. That’s not going to happen if they’re given the option to communicate in Spanish.

Instead of placing Lacey on administrative leave in December, a better option may have been to work out a compromise solution and place her on probation.

As it stands, Hempstead is out a principal, and Lacey is out a job.
