A man in Maine woke up Tuesday to police armed with assault rifles and a bullhorn requesting that he come out of his house.

Police were told that Michael Smith was armed and when he came to the door, he was.

Sort of.

Smith has a tattoo on his abdomen that looks much like a gun tucked into his waistband.

The mix up began when a tree removal company was trimming branches near power lines outside his home. Smith, who works nights, was awoken by all the noise and went out to tell the crew to get off his property, the Morning Sentinel reported.

The workers complied, but one thought he saw a pistol in Smith’s waistband and the police were called.

This was the first time Smith has had an issue with the tattoo, according to the Morning Sentinel.

“I got plans today. I didn’t want to get shot,” Smith reportedly said.

“Obviously it was a misunderstanding and he did not have a weapon, but we had to respond to the initial report as if he did,” Maine State Police Trooper Scott Duff told the Morning Sentinel. “We take all precautions when we don’t have the details.”

No charges were filed in the incident, but as noted by, don’t be surprised if Democrats launch an effort soon to ban “assault tattoos.”
