MSNBC’s Maddow scolds ABC, deliberately distorts history to defend Obama ‘comedy’

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow did her usual lib job of twisting history last week while attacking an ABC news reporter for being insufficiently servile to the Obama regime.

Rachel’s rage Thursday was directed at ABC’s James Avila, who asked during a White House press briefing whether President Obama’s appearance on the Funny or Die website program “Between Two Ferns” might have been a little undignified, given that he’s the president of the United States.

“This is an interview like no other probably ever done by a president,” Avila said.

Maddow pounced, virtually snarling to say other presidents have done comedy routines before. She even showed a clip of Ronald Reagan doing a guest appearance for a Bob Hope birthday party to back it up.  (The clip shows two successful gentlemen of a certain age, ribbing each other gently about getting older. In terms of dignity, Maddow couldn’t have picked a worse clip to prove her point. )

Maddow also used Richard Nixon’s famed “sock it to me” moment on “Laugh In” in 1968, neglecting to mention that he wasn’t president at the time.

But as NewsBusters points out, showing up as a guest for a television special honoring one of the most famous – and patriotic – entertainers in history isn’t the same as using the soft entertainment of a vapid, web-only comedy show to sell a national policy outside adult supervision.

Maddow also neglects to mention the wider context of Avila’s question, which is Obama’s serial pandering of the presidency to appeal to his base, like talking gay marriage and “50 Shades of Gray” with the girls on “The View” during his re-election bid or “slow-jamming” the news with late-night host Jimmy Fallon.

Maddow did get one thing right in her rant, though.

“Telling jokes or being part of comedy bits not only has generations of precedent among American presidents, it really never has diminished the office,” she said. “Presidents have to work way, way harder for that distinction.”

Diminishing the office is one job Barack Obama is really up to.
