House Democrats on Thursday staged what can best be described as an “iPad revolt” over last week’s dustup following former Internal Revenue Service division head Lois Lerner’s non-testimony at a committee hearing.
U.S. Rep. Daniel Kildee, D-Mich., led his contingent of rabble-rousing Democrats by offering a resolution to condemn the “offensive and disrespectful manner” U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., used to adjourn a House Oversight Committee hearing.
Democrats, meanwhile, held smartphones and iPads in the air, showing images of the brouhaha between the two congressmen.
It all started March 5 when U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., threw a temper tantrum after the committee hearing was adjourned. Cummings wanted to ask Lerner some questions, but Issa had already closed the hearing when the witness claimed a Fifth Amendment right and refused to testify.
Issa defended his actions but apologized to Cummings the following day. Although the apology was accepted, that wasn’t enough for Cummings’ Democratic colleagues.
U.S. Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, shut down the “iPad revolt” almost as soon as it started.
“We will not proceed until there is decorum in the House,” Simpson said.
