President Obama participated in a town hall meeting last week with Spanish-language media to sell his signature healthcare law, and was asked a question many Americans are struggling with, according to the LIBRE Initiative video:
“Is the Affordable Care Act really affordable?”
Presented with the details of a family of three earning about $36,000 per year who cannot afford their $315 monthly healthcare premium under Obamacare, the president suggested that they cut back on cable and cell phones.
Seriously.
“I guess what I would say is, if you looked at that person’s budget, and you looked at their cable bill, their telephone — their cell phone bill — other things that they’re spending on, it may turn out that it’s just they haven’t prioritized healthcare because right now everybody’s healthy,” Obama said.

He mentioned tax credits and subsidies, and also said the family “may be able to get health insurance coverage for free or very low costs,” if they qualify for Medicaid.
Obama concluded by lecturing them on spending priorities.
“Nobody actually wants to spend money on health insurance until they get sick,” he said. “And then once they’re sick, the costs of not having health insurance are a lot worse than the costs of having health insurance.”
