With the goal of establishing Florida as the top “Welcome Home” state for the military, the Florida GI Bill passed unanimously Tuesday in the Florida Senate.
The bill offers a tuition break to honorably discharged veterans and funds college scholarships for National Guard members.
Among other provisions, House Bill 7015 provides funds to purchase land next to military bases to prevent encroachment.
The House passed the measure unanimously on the first day of the Legislative Session and it now moves to Gov. Rick Scott’s desk for his signature.
“I’m excited that we care about our military,” Scott said.
The Florida GI Bill was a joint priority of Senate President Don Gaetz and House Speaker Will Weatherford.
“More than 1.5 million veterans, 61,000 active duty military personnel and nearly 12,000 Florida National Guard members and their families help make Florida the great state it is today,” Gaetz said. “To show our gratitude for their unwavering commitment and sacrifice, the Florida Legislature today finalized our commitment to make our state the most-military friendly in the nation.”
The bill was passed on Tuesday, Florida National Guard Day at the Capitol, in honor of service members.
