In his never-ending quest to sell insurance to young people who don’t really want it, President Barack Obama agreed to appear on Zach Galifianakis’ comedic mock-interview series, “Between Two Ferns.”
Right from the get-go, Galifianakis appeared to stumble over the name “Obama” and apologized for having cancelled several earlier interview dates.
“Do you send Ambassador [Dennis] Rodman to North Korea on your behalf? I read somewhere that you’d be sending Hulk Hogan to Syria – or is that more of a job for Tonya Harding?” Galifianakis asked.
He also asked Obama whether he planned to build his presidential library in Hawaii or his native Kenya, and what it felt like to be the last black president.
Although funny, the whole thing seemed unbefitting a commander-in-chief. However the White House defended it. According to the Washington Examiner:
White House press secretary Jay Carney said the interview was “designed to reach Americans where they live” and that those efforts had been successful.
“FunnyorDie.com is the #1 source of referrals to http://healthcare.gov right now,” senior White House communications adviser Tara McGuinness tweeted Tuesday about the website hosting the interview.
Carney, though, conceded that it was “safe to say” there had never been a similar presidential interview before.
The White House staff are perhaps the only people to believe the interview was appropriate. This especially came to light when CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller — a serious guy — tweeted:
The Galifianakis show is posted at http://t.co/goOqvLPl7r. It brings my Obama interview count to Galifianakis 1, Knoller 0.

But the final joke was on Obama’s predecessor. At the close of the interview, the president pushed a button that caused the rear curtain to drop, revealing am interior shot of the White House.
“You’ve been shooting these shows here in the Diplomatic Room? Who gave you permission to do that?” the president asked.
“Bush,” Galifianakis said.
Five years later, and they’re still blaming Bush.
