Obama’s quiet immigration policy change opens way for ‘whole class of aliens’ to gain residency

Without benefit of Congress — or even comment from the American public — an Obama immigration policy is granting legal status to thousands of previously illegal immigrants.

immig0310“I don’t want to overstate it, but it sounds very similar to imperial decree if you ask me,” Dan Cadman of the Center for Immigration Studies told Fox News in a report that aired Monday. “The public had no chance to comment on this new policy. I believe the way this was done was illegal.”

It might not have been illegal, but it sure was quiet.

Known as “parole in place,” the policy went into effect late last year under a rule change by the  U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, an arm of the Department of Homeland Security. As an internal change, it did not require congressional approval and was not published in the Federal Register, which requires a period of public comment before new regulations can take effect.

The policy received minimal attention when it was announced as part of a Friday news dump on Nov. 15. A 12-paragraph story buried in The New York Times contained interviews exclusively with supporters of the change – and even quoted one advocate saying it didn’t go far enough.

But the Fox broadcast showed its critics are unswayed.

Besides the process behind the policy, Cadman said he was concerned that it was overly broad. It does not grant citizenship, but it does grant legal status and eligibility for government benefits to any parent, spouse or child of any person who serves or has served in the military, regardless of their time of service.

“It extends to any former member of the military … even if they are discharged dishonorably,” Cadman said.

“A whole class of aliens with no right to be in the United States are suddenly going to be allowed to live and work here on the basis of their relationship with military and veterans.”
