Ted Cruz shines at CPAC: Elections are won on principles, not pandering

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz opened CPAC-2014 Thursday morning by saying what was on everyone’s mind — how to win elections.

Two things are required, Cruz said. Conservatives must stand upon their principles and tell the truth.

He then listed 10 conservative principles, based upon law, education and economics, including defending the Constitution, and expanding energy and school choice.

He included the necessity of repealing Dodd-Frank in his list, saying, “You don’t have to read any further than the title to know nothing good can come of this.”

Former U.S. Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn. and U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., who the act was named after were both closely associated with the expansion of the Community Reinvestment Act, a factor leading to the collapse of the real estate bubble between 200-7 and 2008.

Repeal of Obamacare was also included. Cruz borrowed a 2008 Obama campaign slogan on this one to say, “Yes we can.”

He listed number 9 as stoping the lawlessness in government. “If you have a president who is picking and choosing what laws to follow and what laws to ignore, you no longer have a president,” he said.

“And number 10,” and related to 9, “We need to end the corruption.”
