U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., set a strong tone on foreign policy Thursday at CPAC 2014, stressing key differences between Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama.
Telling the conservative audience he did not like to make national security issues partisan, Rubio said “we cannot ignore that the foreign policy in the last few years has brought us” to where we are today.
“Because we have a president who believed by the sheer force of his personality, he would be able to shape global events,” Rubio said. “We have a president that believes by going around the world and giving key speeches in key places, he can shape the behavior of other nations and other people.”
Childish retaliation: Obama administration freezes out Fox News
The potential 2016 GOP presidential candidate said Obama “loves to point to Ronald Reagan” to explain why his administration talks to rogue governments like Iran, and then spelled out how Reagan was different.
“Reagan dealt with the Soviet Union because they had nuclear weapons and he wanted peace,” Rubio said. “But he never accepted the Soviet Union. He called them what they were, an evil empire. He never relinquished the moral arguments that what they did was wrong, and unsustainable, and contrary to the rights of all men.”
“He did not fall victim or in the trap of moral relativism in foreign policy, where we somehow look the other way at these violations of human rights that occur all over the world in these countries, and accept them as a normal type of government, just a different type of government,” he added.
Rubio was at his best in saying the Unites States should never accept immoral acts as a legitimate form of government, proving he will be a tough challenger should he throw his hat in the ring for 2016.
