The top House Republican overseeing the nation’s military accusing the Obama administration and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Tuesday of taking a “shortsighted,” politically driven approach to national security and rejected a Pentagon outline for the nation’s military over the next four years.
In a statement, Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Calif., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said the outline – known as the Quadrennial Defense Review – envisions a smaller military without explaining how that will meet defense needs in the future.
Tuesday was the first time in history lawmakers have rejected the four-year review.
“Unfortunately, the product the process produced this time has more to do with politics than policy and is of little value to decision makers,” McKeon said in a statement.
“It allows the president to duck the consequences of the deep defense cuts he has advocated and leaves us all wondering what the true future costs of those cuts will be.”
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel – a guy who was in over his head even before Russia invaded its second country in five years – pretended Tuesday the outline just reflected budget realities.
“[C]ontinued fiscal constraints cannot be ignored,” he said in a statement.
. “A strategy must have the resources for its implementation.”
That’s true enough, but he ought to talk to his boss about that.
Meanwhile, after five years of Obama, the military outlook is grim.
In a statement released with the defense review, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had little good to report.
“The smaller and less capable military outlined in the QDR makes meeting these obligations more difficult,” he said, according to McClatchy News Service.
