Eight months after its expose’ on food stamp abuse, The O’Reilly Factor found California surfer Jason Greenslate is still receiving $190 a month in the free benefits.
The unapologetic surfer, who isn’t holding down a regular job, is taking the handouts while driving a Cadillac Escalade, buying booze and cigarettes, and visiting strip clubs, he admitted in a recent interview.
“Are you gaming the system?” O’Reilly Factor reporter Jesse Watters asked Greenslate.
“Nah, man,” he responded. “I fit the qualifications. Do I have to apologize for the way the system’s set up?”
When Watters asked the 29-year-old musician if he was still buying lobster, he said, “When it’s on sale.”
Greenslate told the reporter he had no clue how much the national debt had risen to, but that he was contributing to the country.
“I bring smiles to a lot of people with my music, you know?” he said.
Asked if he thought people might not agree with his situation, the wannabe rock star said: “Just because my job is a little cooler than your job, and people are a little bit more jealous than anything. … Food stamps give me opportunity to focus more on a career. … You can’t really survive on a minimum-wage job. Places are expensive.”
Greenslate said he expected to make millions off his music soon and leave the food stamps program behind.
In California, proof of residency and a birth certificate are all that’s required to receive food stamps, Watters told O’Reilly, who noted that under the Obama administration, the cost of the program had more than doubled, to $79.9 billion in 2013.
But “[Greenslate] was just following his passion,” O’Reilly said wryly, paraphrasing U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
