A majority of Americans now think President Obama is not respected by other world leaders, according to the latest Gallup poll.
In Gallup’s annual world affairs poll conducted in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, 53 percent of respondents found the president’s handling of foreign affairs had diminished his standing on the global stage.
A slight majority felt that America was viewed favorably by the international community, but only 40 percent gave Obama a passing grade for his job performance in dealing with other countries. The change in perception was most pronounced among independent voters, who attributed Obama’s shrunken world stature to his fecklessness in Syria, his halting leadership, the National Security Agency’s eavesdropping on German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ability to outmaneuver him on the nuclear arms front.
When asked about the United States’ position in today’s world, 61 percent said they were dissatisfied — consistent with polls taken since 2007.
On Fox News Monday, former Vice President Dick Cheney agreed with Gallup’s findings.
“I know for a fact they [world leaders] no longer have confidence in American security guarantees,” he told host Sean Hannity. “They’re absolutely convinced they can no longer trust the United States to keep its commitments. That includes Israelis, Saudis and a lot of others in that part of the world.
“I think the whole thing is not driven by any change in world circumstances,” Cheney added, “but by budget cut considerations. He [the president] would rather spend money on food stamps than he would on a strong military and supporting our troops.”
