With Obamacare enrollment numbers not failing to meet expectations, some communities are looking to boost their numbers – by signing
up prisoners.
New York’s Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said such a move would save local taxpayer dollars and provide coverage for inmates after their release, according to local CBS affiliate WRGB.
More than 50 inmates have signed up, and 400 more are eligible, Apple told the TV station. Trevaughn Banks is one of them, and plans to be released from the Albany correctional facility next month, according to WRGB.
“I don’t want to have to [pay] out of pocket every time I need to take a trip to the doctor or emergency room,” Banks said, adding that prisoners deserve health care.
