In homage to Presidents Day, Huckabee reflects on what the presidency should be

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee asked on his Fox News show last weekend what would George Washington have done if he were living today. Would he have engaged in the power grab we see from the current head of state?

As we celebrate Presidents Day Monday, it’s instructive to note that Washington established the presidency’s structure, “from the cabinet to the inaugural address,” he said. “But the most important thing is what George Washington didn’t do.”

Although power was offered to the father of out country, he rejected it. “He refused royal titles like ‘Your highness,’” and “could have become ruler for life.” Instead he gave up the reins of power and peacefully transferred it to his successor after serving two terms.

It’s a far cry from today’s presidential power grabs that serve to upset the balance among the three branches of government.
