CNN’s Ashleigh Banfield received death threats on Twitter throughout the coverage of the “loud music” murder trial, the host said Monday.
A jury convicted Michael Dunn on three counts of attempted second-degree murder, but failed to reach a verdict on the first-degree murder charge in the 2012 shooting death of Jordan Davis in Jacksonville. The case has prompted comparisons to the George Zimmerman case and questions about whether race was a factor in the jury’s decision.
Banfield said she would like to host a weeklong series discussing the aspects of the case, featuring “every color, every notion, every attitude,” with everyone able to speak freely without Twitter threats.
“Call it back, folks!” she said. “Stop threatening to kill people on Twitter because you don’t like what they are saying. That’s the problem. If we can’t communicate, we are never going to know what the problem is. And this is a case that outlines it.”
Banfield’s CNN panel agreed that a sound-bite didn’t compare to 30 hours of jury deliberation.
“And you know? No Twitter,” she said. “I have had it with people who are threatening me and my kids and my family over simply commenting on the law and criminal procedure and respecting juries. Because they do work hard. They work way harder than I do, and they work way harder than the rest of those people making those peanut-gallery comments.”
